Kids at Heart Australia changes lives and changes communities.

Kids at Heart breaks the cycle of generational poverty, systemic adversity and exclusion for youth and adults living in disadvantaged circumstances.

Community Development

We Emphasise Future Possibilities

KAHA works with youth (11-14, 14-17) to expand their self-awareness to accomplish goals they thought were beyond their reach.

KAHA works with parents to expand their parenting skills to accomplish goals they imagined were impossible.

KAHA works with youth service professionals to strengthen their skills while working with at-risk youth.

Everyone from one geographical area – from all walks of life – who are interested in becoming the Kids At Heart Team for their community comes together for development sessions. These sessions supplement professionals limited resources and empower people to work more effectively with at-risk youth. The sessions are interactive in nature, they are not a lecture but a thought-provoking inquiry designed to clarify participation in the program and enhance the ability to make powerful choices. Everyone gains a new appreciation of themselves as people with a unique commitment to their community.

Kids at Heart Team members dedicate themselves to nurturing the voluntary commitment made by the youth change their future direction.

All of the programs conducted by Kids at Heart are evidence-based experiential programs. These programs use a cognitive approach and a practical experience of change aimed at altering a youth’s self-perception to facilitate breakthroughs in their areas of challenge. New thinking establishes new goals and an achievable plan to accomplish them.

All staff, volunteer, mentors, and coaches are trained to support each young person in setting the stage for breakthrough, with a sense of hope and ownership of their future lives.

Volunteers and Facilitators complete the Kids at Heart Curriculum for Community Development, attending a 3-day workshop, before meeting with the youth.

Course Delivery

The Kids at Heart Breakthrough Youth Program consists of two components: a Residential Intensive and a one-year Follow-through Program.

The length of the Residential Intensive varies according to the age and the number of youth participating in the program.

The course is delivered at an all-in retreat. Kids at Heart staff, volunteer, mentors, coaches and the youth are “all-in” together in a highly structured course that combines physical activities and room sessions with guided group conversations. This week holds life-changing moments for everyone involved.

The work done in the room sessions is the critical element which sets Kids at Heart Breakthrough apart from other programs.

Using multiple learning approaches, such as, small group workshops, one-on-one coaching, and large group weekend retreats, we break old negative destructive patterns and introduce alternative thinking to develop the courage necessary to take life-changing actions.

Parent Workshop

Parents of youth who participated in the Residential Intensive attend a 2-day workshop designed to improve the relationship between parents and their children and create more constructive communication.
